Let me tell you how I ended up with an Apple Watch designed for scuba divers.
I had been a Fitbit person for years.
Steps.
Movement.
The occasional marathon when I was still running them.
That was the full extent of my relationship with my tracker.
My kids had gifted me a Garmin at one point, and that watch carried real sentimental value.
But between life, work, and the particular kind of busyness that never quite slows down, I never took the puppy out for a spin to see what it could actually do.
It lived on my wrist.
It counted my steps.
That was about it.
Then I looked around one day and realized I had an iPhone, an iPad, AirPods, and a MacBook.
I was fully in the Apple ecosystem whether I had planned it or not.
So I thought — why not?
I started researching Apple Watches and somehow ended up with a model built for scuba diving.
I cannot swim.
But just in case I ever decide to take up scuba diving, I will be absolutely ready.
The Truth About Fitness Tracking
I will admit something else, too.
Back in my Fitbit days, when my family would do step challenges against each other, I discovered something important about human nature:
If you swing your arms with enough enthusiasm while standing still, the watch counts it as steps.
I may have used this information strategically on more than one occasion.
I’m not proud.
I am also not alone — everyone who has ever done a family step challenge knows exactly what I am talking about.
Here is the thing, though.
All of that — the arm swinging, the step counting, the treating the watch as a glorified pedometer — is using a remarkably sophisticated piece of technology at about five percent of its capacity.
And most of us are doing exactly that.
The smart watch on your wrist is quietly tracking one of the most underused datasets available to anyone serious about their health.
And if you have been wearing a fitness tracker for months or years and your body has not changed the way you hoped, there is a high likelihood that the problem is not the watch.
The problem is what you are asking it to track.
Movement and Exercise Are Not the Same Thing

Let us start with the honest distinction that the fitness industry has not always been direct about:
Steps are movement.
Exercise is a stimulus.
They are not the same thing.
And the difference is physiologically significant.

That is real.
And it matters.
But here is what steps do not consistently do:

Progressive overload — the principle that the body must be placed under continually greater stress to continue adapting — is widely considered the single most important principle in fitness.
And the most commonly ignored.
Walking the same distance at the same pace, day after day, is not progressive overload.
It is maintenance, at best.
If you have been doing the same thing for six months and nothing is different, your body is not broken.
It is done adapting.
It needs something new.

What Your Watch Is Actually Capable Of Tracking
The device most people use exclusively as a pedometer is, in most cases, a sophisticated physiological monitoring system that most of its owners have barely touched.
Here is what the data on your wrist is actually capable of telling you:
Heart Rate Zones
Your smartwatch calculates heart rate zones based on your maximum heart rate — each representing a different physiological state with a different training effect:
- Zone 1–2 (50–70% max HR): Active recovery and aerobic base. Fat as primary fuel.
- Zone 3 (70–80% max HR): Aerobic conditioning. Your cardiovascular system is being genuinely challenged.
- Zone 4 (80–90% max HR): Threshold training. Where cardiovascular fitness improves significantly.
- Zone 5 (90–100% max HR): Maximum effort. Brief intervals. Significant cardiovascular and metabolic adaptation.
Most people who count steps live almost exclusively in Zones 1–2.
The watch is measuring whether your heart is actually being trained.

VO2 Max: The Metric Nobody Uses
VO2 max is your body’s capacity to consume and use oxygen during exercise — one of the strongest predictors of cardiovascular fitness and long-term health.
Most modern smartwatches estimate it.
Most users never look at it.
If your VO2 max has not moved in six months of daily step counting, your body is telling you something:
The stimulus is not sufficient.
Steps maintain it. Intensity improves it.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
HRV is the variation in time between heartbeats.
A higher HRV indicates a well-recovered nervous system.

Here is the wellness conversation that gets the least attention and causes the most preventable symptoms:
Water.
Most people are quietly, chronically under-hydrated.
Not dramatically.
Not dangerously.
But enough to affect how they feel and perform every single day.
And most people do not realize it until the symptom has already arrived.
That mid-afternoon headache?
Often dehydration.
The constipation that arrives without an obvious cause?
Also often dehydration.
Other common signs include:
- Fatigue and brain fog
- Dull skin
- Muscle cramps
- Dizziness when standing
- Poor concentration
- Feeling generally “off”
Many smartwatch companion apps include water intake logging.
Some watches actively prompt hydration reminders throughout the day.
The biggest barrier to hydration is not motivation.
It is forgetting.
Use the reminders.
Log the water.
Let the watch help.
What the Research Actually Says
Moving Beyond Steps
Walking matters.
But walking alone does not consistently create the metabolic, cardiovascular, and body composition changes most people are hoping for.
Structured exercise — especially combining aerobic and resistance training — changes outcomes.
Training without progression wastes years.
The body adapts.
And once it adapts, it needs something new.
How to Actually Use Your Watch to Level Up
You do not need a gym membership.
You do not need a personal trainer.
You need to look beyond the step count.
Some places to start:
- Set a heart rate zone goal, not just a step goal.
- Track your VO2 max monthly.
- Watch your HRV before adding more training.
- Log your mood and stress consistently.
- Treat sleep data as seriously as workout data.
- Track your water intake daily.
- Add progressive challenge — not just more steps.
The Honest Bottom Line
Your steps count.
Every single one of them.
Moving more is always better than moving less.
And if counting steps is what gets you off the couch and into the habit of daily movement, that is genuinely valuable.
